Types of Windows: Aluminum, uPVC and more!

If you ask a kid to draw something, most probably he’ll draw a house. How do we know that it is a house, because most probably he will draw a door in center and a window on side. That’s how important windows are, just as important as the doors.

Obviously doors are used to move in and out of the house and rooms. To bring fresh air inside the rooms, that part is done by the windows. Windows not only make the rooms livable by bringing fresh air from the outside, but they also bring sunlight and fresh views, otherwise those concrete boxes would be very difficult to live in.

I can’t stress this enough, the more windows the better. In my opinion, every room should have at least one normal size window. Fresh air and sunlight can never be enough for anyone.

If we talk about the types of windows, we have a variety of options. Although if you go out and check the windows of houses in your block, you’ll probably see that almost all the houses have same type of windows. We’ll discuss it but let’s talk about comparatively more expensive and rarely seen types of windows  first.

Wooden windows

There was a time when wood was cheap and readily available, but not any more. Wooden windows are very expensive, not only in manufacturing but also in the maintenance. Wooden windows need to be polished and they can’t withstand water damage. If they aren’t polished and taken care of regularly, they start to fall apart and restoring them gets very expensive and tricky.

If you can find some wood at cheap rate then I’d say go for it. It looks beautiful and gives your house a very artistic and unique look, also the wooden textures are in fashion these days, so it’s a win-win.

Steel windows

Back in the days when wood started to get expensive, steel was the best alternative. Steel windows were widely adopted as they were very durable and strong. They could withstand the harsh weather conditions much better then the wood and unlike wood, steel designs had much more variety then the wooden windows.

Now the bad parts, they can easily be rusted. Steel being not-very-attractive-metal-to-looks-at, it only provides a handful of options for design. They are a bit cheaper but they don’t look good. We have better options that look good and are affordable too. Let’s discuss them.

uPVC windows

These windows have been widely used across the globe for quite some time now, but you’ll rarely see it in Pakistan. uPVC or “Unplasticized PolyVinyl Chloride” is a form of PVC. It is chemically treated PVC used to make windows frames, among other things. They are not made locally but imported from Europe and China.

The reason why you’d rarely see them is because they are expensive. They are costlier then aluminum windows because they are imported, but they are much more durable and have more design options. Default color of uPVC windows is white, that’s the color your windows will be in. Color can be changed but that only increases the price.

Aluminum windows

The windows you’ll see in 99% of the houses are Aluminum windows. They are available in a variety of options, which means their price also fluctuates. Some good quality aluminum windows are even costlier then the uPVC and Aluminum windows, but some are cheaper too.

Aluminum sections are available in different categories, and these categories define their gauges. Top quality aluminum section gauge is 2 and the lowest quality is 1.2. List of aluminum section gauges are 1.2, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.

They are available in silver and champagne colors. White and black and wooden texture colors can be achieved by applying coating over it. Keep in mind that coatings will increase the price.

What we did?

Let’s discuss that in a future post. If you have any suggestion or question; feel free to comment below.
